Whittington's "Speak Freely" Chosen as Princeton Pre-read

Feb. 15, 2018

Keith Whittington's book, Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech, has been selected as Princeton University's Pre-read by President Eisgruber for the Class of 2022. In announcing the selection, President Eisgruber describes Speak Freely as "a thoughtful and illuminating examination of free speech and its essential role in the truth-seeking mission of colleges and universities. President Eisgruber hopes that Speak Freely will inspire students, faculty, and staff to discuss and debate the meaning of free speech and the mission of universities, thereby reinforcing and deepening the values and practices that define Princeton’s scholarly community."

The Pre-read program introduces incoming freshmen to Princeton’s intellectual life. Members of the incoming class join together to read and discuss a book that President Eisgruber selects and sends to freshmen prior to their arrival on campus. Freshmen then participate in Pre-read discussions with student leaders during Orientation Week and with President Eisgruber in the residential colleges and elsewhere on campus over the course of the academic year. Other University community members also are encouraged to read and discuss the Pre-read selection.

Keith Whittington is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics at Princeton University and a CSDP Faculty Associate.
