Whittington Op-Ed in Washington Post: Impeachment isn’t mandatory

Friday, Sep 27, 2019

Keith Whittington penned an op-ed in the Washington Post: Impeachment isn’t mandatory — even if Trump committed impeachable offenses. Keith Whittington is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics and a CSDP faculty associate. He is the author of numerous books, including Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech, as well as Constitutional Construction: Divided Powers and Constitutional Meaning, and Constitutional Interpretation: Textual Meaning, Original Intent, and Judicial Review, and Political Foundations of Judicial Supremacy: The Presidency, the Supreme Court, and Constitutional Leadership in U.S. History.

But as alarming as the allegations are — that Trump tried to use U.S. military aid as a cudgel to get Ukraine to help him politically — impeachment is still not required....Leaders of both parties should learn some lessons from this presidency, no matter how it ends, and reexamine Congress’s capacity to do its job — and the extent to which we have been relying on the good character and judgment of individuals in the White House to keep the government on an even keel.
